Tulsa Gets USA Masters 15 km Championships

Track and Field and the Tulsa Sports Commission announced a five-year agreement that will bring the Masters 15 km Championships to Tulsa from 2013-2017.

The championships will be a part of the historical Tulsa Run, a more than 35-year tradition that annually brings thousands to Downtown Tulsa the last Saturday of October.

“A year ago, the Tulsa Sports Commission was named race management of the Tulsa Run. We made it our mission to enhance Tulsa’s favorite run, and to expand on the prestige and history the Tulsa Run holds,” says Ray Hoyt, senior vice president of VisitTulsa and the Tulsa Sports Commission. “Now, a year later, we’re excited to announce the Track and Field Masters 15k Championships will be held on race day, Oct. 26, 2013, and in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017, bringing some of the nation’s top runners to the region and boosting the Tulsa Run’s competition set.”

More than 8,000 participants ran in last year’s Tulsa Run, including athletic talent from around the globe. Tulsa has a strong history of hosting premier athletic events including basketball, golf and tennis championships, Men’s World League Volleyball, the championships, Conference championships and much more.

“The Tulsa Run has a history of excellence and USATF Masters Long Distance Running Committee is proud to work with their outstanding staff in offering the U.S. Masters 15K Championship,” says committee chair Don Lein. “We are certain that our runners will experience a challenging, yet professionally run event in a city that welcomes them.”
