Tulsa Gridiron Finishes 80th Year of ‘Griddling’

OFFICIAL GRILL: D.J. Morrow, left photo, and Paul Henry portray Gov. Mary Fallin and Mitt Romney, respectively, in Tulsa Gridiron’s recent performance. The organization began in 1933 with the goal of supporting free speech and political and social commentary.

The Tulsa Gridiron was held Jan. 25-26. Its inaugural performance was in 1933; its mission continues to be that of supporting free speech and political and social commentary.

The gridiron’s name refers to the cooking griddle often used in frying bacon and making pancakes. In a similar way, the organization verbally “griddles” elected officials and other public figures, as well as pop-culture and sports icons in a live-theater production set to songs and skits with highly irreverent comedic intent.
