Tulsa Men’s Soccer Team Faces Charlotte in C-USA Championship Match
Tulsa’s fifth-seeded men’s soccer team will take on sixth-seeded Charlotte in the Conference Championship match on Sunday, Nov. 17th. Game time is set for 12:30 pm Central at Transamerica Field in Charlotte, N.C. The game will be televised live on Sports.
In the nine-year history of the Conference Men’s Soccer Championship, Tulsa has tallied a 15-3-2 overall record in the tournament. The Golden Hurricane won the tournament in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2012, and also played in the title game in 2005, 2010 and now 2013.
TU was picked as the Conference preseason favorite by the league’s coaches, while New Mexico, Charlotte, Old Dominion and Kentucky rounded out the top five teams.
The Golden Hurricane is coached by Tom McIntosh, who is truly the epitome of Tulsa men’s soccer. He has an overall record of 209-138-32 and has notched a conference mark of 83-59-19 as a member of three conferences. Since he first walked on campus as a player in 1986, McIntosh has been a part of 279 of TU’s 365 victories either as a player (1986-88), an assistant coach (1989-91) or as the head coach.
Tulsa, which posts an 11-5-3 overall record and had a 4-3-2 mark in C-, ranks among the nation’s top-50 teams in five categories so far this season, including 26th in scoring offense (1.94), 30th in total goals (37), 31st in points per game (5.42), 38th in total points (103) and 48th in won-lost-tied percentage (.618).
The Golden Hurricane is on a four-game winning streak and has not lost the last six games. TU’s last loss came against then fifth-ranked , 2-1, on Oct. 19th. Tulsa has outscored its opponents, 37-18, this season, including a 13-4 advantage in the first frame.
Cristian Mata leads the way for TU, scoring 10 goals and adding seven assists for 27 points. Akeil Barrett has scored seven goals and has a team-high eight assists for 22 points, while Kyle Cumings, Omar Mata and Tony Rocha have recorded four goals apiece. Cody Mumma has played in eight games for a total of 719:29 minutes in goal, 25 saves and four shutouts this year, and Jake McGuire has logged 1070:57 in 12 games for 42 saves and three shutouts.
Charlotte has an 11-5-3 overall record and tallied a 4-3-2 mark in Conference , the exact same as Tulsa. The 49ers are led by Kyle Parker with 11 goals, while Giuseppe Gentile has netted eight scores. Klay Davis has logged the majority of minutes in goal, recorded 54 saves and earned eight shutouts this season.
TU met the 49ers for the first time earlier this season when the Golden Hurricane earned a 3-2 overtime win in Tulsa.
