Since taking office in 2006, my administration has made the health and fitness of our city a priority. With our state’s alarming rankings – Oklahoma has the eighth highest obesity rate in the nation – we must make the right kind of investments now to improve the health of our citizens.

Join us in helping Tulsa get healthy, one mile at a time. Log on to “Tulsa Million Miles“http://www.TulsaMillionMiles.com!

Last October, the Mayor’s Office along with 55 Mayor’s Fitness Challenge partners launched Tulsa Million Miles – a healthy and fit initiative dedicated to helping Tulsans log the miles they walk, run, bike or swim. Our goal is for Tulsans to reach one million miles as a community in a year and make Tulsa a healthy city.

Right now, Tulsa is the only city in the United States where citizens can come together in their exercising efforts to collectively achieve a million miles of distance. As of this writing, 2,226 Tulsa Million Miles users have logged more than 717,000 miles, averaging 323 miles per person. Whether you stay active by walking, running, biking, or swimming, you can track your miles on “Tulsa Million Miles“http://www.TulsaMillionMiles.com and see Tulsa’s total mileage accumulate at the top-right corner of the screen.

If you haven’t signed up yet, it’s not too late to become a part of our million-mile experience. Simply go to www.tulsamillionmiles.com and click on the “Not Registered Yet?” link below the blue login box. Then enter your name and e-mail address, choose a username and password and you will be ready to start logging your miles. You can register individually or as a group. You can even list an accountability partner to help you keep on track of your exercising goals.

While you’re logged on to the Web site, why not submit your guess as to when Tulsa will reach its one million mile goal. But hurry, eligible entries (only one per person) must be submitted before we reach 850,000 total miles. First prize package (a $1,000 cash value) includes:

• Weekend Stay at the Tulsa Marriott
• Three-Month Personal Vitamin Supply
• Tulsa Drillers Rookie Package
• Annual Family Membership from the Oklahoma Aquarium
• Tulsa Million Miles T-Shirts for the Family
• Two Tickets to a Center Event in the Fall!
Other prizes for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place winners include Tulsa Million Miles family T-shirts and a $50 personal vitamin gift certificate.

Some of the features on TulsaMillionMiles.com include a listing of local events, races, and marathons that can be an exciting and fun way for people to get together and exercise. Plus, members can find trail maps, park information, activity guides, an iPhone application, great resources, and more. Tulsa boasts a wealth of 125 parks and more than 180 miles of trails, so there are plenty of places in our beautiful city for you to enjoy a walk or bike ride with your family.

Our Tulsa Parks Department also offers hundreds of exercise classes and activities geared specifically for individuals and families. You can stay fit and healthy all year long by taking advantage of low-cost fitness rooms that are available at seven of its 11 community centers. For information about Tulsa Parks’ programs and activities, visit one of Tulsa Parks’ community centers to pick up a Tulsa Parks 2009 Fall Fun Guide, or download a copy of it at: www.tulsaparks.org

If you’re looking for an exciting event to participate in this fall, I invite you to join us for the 32nd annual Tulsa Run, October 31. City of Tulsa employees, Tulsa County employees, City and County officials, as well as Tulsa Public School students will be joining me for the 2k Fun Run where we will also be celebrating our year-long Tulsa Million Miles efforts. Tulsa Run participants can also join me in supporting our Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma by bringing non-perishable food items or making a donation that will help feed our less-fortunate Oklahoma families. For details about Tulsa Run registration, be sure to visit Tulsa Run

Please join me today in helping Tulsa become a healthy and fit city. Let’s do it for our kids, let’s do it for ourselves…so we can live healthy and fulfilling lives. Together, we can shape up Tulsa, one mile at a time!
