Tulsa Rowing Club Offers ‘Learn to Row’
The Tulsa Rowing Club Juniors Team offers a Learn-To-Row week to recruit high-school-age athletes interested in learning how to row in racing shells. Lessons will be held at the University of Tulsa Indoor Rowing Tank, The Tulsa Rowing Club Boathouse and the University of Tulsa Boathouse in Catoosa (weather permitting).
Learn To Row sessions run Tuesday, Feb. 19 through Friday, Feb. 22 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The learn to row will be offered at $75 per athlete. Interested participants must enroll on the club website and complete a swim test at a local . Required enrollment forms and information about the juniors program can be found at www.tulsarowing.org/juniors.
Rowing is a year round sport, and the athletes are much safer than in other contact sports. The activity is a full body workout and many athletes transfer from other sports. In addition, other students are trying the sport for the first time.
The Tulsa Rowing Club endeavors to teach the youth athletes life skills that extend well beyond their time in the club. The Tulsa Rowing Club is a melting pot and athletes in the program are students at 15 different high schools from across the Tulsa area. Students also have the opportunity to earn college scholarships while developing a life-long passion for the sport. In addition, the student athletes in the club are encouraged to be studious and maintain excellent s.
This past season the Tulsa Rowing Club Juniors won medals in Oklahoma City, Austin and Wichita in the many different events.
The team also sent a boys varsity eight to the Head of the Charles in Boston for the first time. In addition, Cascia Hall senior Victoria Richter signed to row at the Division I level for the University of Tulsa starting in the fall of 2013.
The club is currently planning a trip to row in the United Kingdom next summer. The trip will feature a chance to compete at three events including Henley Royal Regatta.
“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the club, and I can sense how excited our athletes are at the prospect. Our training has intensified, and competing on an international stage has become a primary focus for our varsity athletes,” says Head Coach Neil Bergenroth.
