Tulsa’s John Beattie Repeats as Conference USA Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year
IRVING, Texas – Tulsa senior John Beattie was named Conference Male Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year for the second-straight season, as announced today by the league office. It is the fifth-time in his career to be named conference Athlete of the Year after earning the same honors during the indoor season.
Beattie won the conference championship in the 5,000 meters with a meet record time of 14:05.56, which marked the fifth individual track and field title of his career. He also placed 10th in the 10,000m at the Championships with a time of 29:16.48.
“I’m really excited for John,” Head Coach Steve Gulley said. “He worked really hard in his time here at Tulsa and had a great career. He also matured a lot and became a very good team leader.”
The Southampton, England native also set school records in the 5,000m (13:42.03) and 10,000m (28:32.21) this season, giving him four school records for his career.
Beattie was a standout in cross country as well, earning All-America honors in 2008, in addition to being named the 2008 and ’09 C- Cross Country Male Athlete of the Year after winning the individual title both years.
