Tulsa’s Manning Names UMKC’s Wendell Moore to Coaching Staff
Newly appointed University of Tulsa Head Basketball Coach Danny Manning announced today the appointment of Wendell Moore as an assistant coach for the Golden Hurricane.
Moore comes to Tulsa from where he served as an assistant coach for the past four seasons (2008-12). Before that, Moore served as an assistant coach at Florida Atlantic University for two years (2006-08).
“We’re extremely excited to have Wendell join our basketball staff. Wendell is very connected to the region having been a coach in Oklahoma at Redlands College and recently at in Kansas City, as well as playing at Hutchinson Junior College,” said Manning. “He’s been in the coaching profession for a very long time and has established strong recruiting ties around the country, especially in Texas, junior colleges and the Midwest region. I’ve known Wendell for a very long time and am pleased to have him and his family become a part of our TU family.”
Before moving to , Moore spent two seasons (2004-06) as an assistant coach at Redlands Community College in El Reno, Okla. During his two-year stint, the Cougars posted a 50-10 overall record, and they were the regional championship runner-up in 2005. He helped coach four student-athletes to junior college All-America honors, while Redlands posted the top grade point average (3.43) in the nation.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for me in joining Danny’s staff. It’s not too common to have a staff that is very familiar in the sense of having known each other for nearly 20 years and then having the basketball background too. For me, it’s a great opportunity to work and grow with people that you know and trust,” said Moore.
Moore is very familiar with Tulsa Golden Hurricane basketball.
“Being from Wichita, Kansas, I had a chance to see the success that Tulsa has had from the early 1980’s with all the great coaches that have coached here – starting with Nolan Richardson and continuing with Tubby Smith, Bill Self and others. I’m excited because of the fact that people in the community are very, very strong in supporting Tulsa basketball.”
Prior to joining the collegiate ranks, Moore spent five seasons as the head coach at Wyandotte (Kan.) High School, where he competed against the top prep teams in Kansas City, Kan. In 2004, he guided the Bulldogs to a 14-7 overall record and all five of his starters went on to receive college basketball scholarships. One of his players, Keith “Boo” Richardson, was a Class 5A All-State selection before going on to earn First-Team Junior College All-America accolades.
Moore played collegiate basketball for two seasons at Georgia Southern, where he helped lead the 1991-92 squad to the Trans-American Athletic Conference () Championship and the Tournament with a school record 25 wins. During the historic season, Moore helped the Eagles set school records for single-season steals (92) and three-point field goal percentage (.470). For his play, Moore earned all-conference honors and was named /Chevrolet’s Most Valuable Player at the Tournament.
Before that, Moore received his first college exposure as a student-athlete at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College, where he started on the nation’s preseason No. 1 team as a sophomore in 1989-90. Moore’s success as a player began at Wichita South High School, where he earned all-state honors after helping his team to an undefeated season en route to the 1988 6A Kansas State Championship.
A native of Wichita, Kan., Moore earned his bachelor’s degree in communication in 1993 from Georgia Southern University. He and his wife, Tamelia, have three children: Noah, Peydan and Aunni.
