TULSA’S MARCELO AREVALO UPSETS No. 1-RANKED JP SMITH IN MAIN DRAW AT D’NOVO ITA’s
TULSA, Okla. – Tulsa sophomore Marcelo Arevalo upset No. 1-ranked John-Patrick Smith of Tennessee 7-5, 6-3 Thursday morning in the first round of the Main Draw at the 2010 D’Novo/ITA All-American Men’s Tennis Championships at Case Tennis Center.
Arevalo went ahead of the defending champion 4-1 after an early break of service, but Smith was able to break back and tie the match at 4-all.
Both players held serve, and Arevalo was able to break Smith at 6-5 to take the opening set 7-5.
Arevalo once again broke Smith early in the second set and had a chance to serve for the match at 5-3. He went down 15-40, but collected himself and won four-straight massive points to take the match in straight sets.
He will play again at 1:30 p.m. today against No. 30-ranked Jose Hernandez of North Carolina. Hernandez defeated USC’s Peter Lucassen 6-3, 6-3.
