Tulsa’s Zabian Dowdell Signs with Phoenix Suns
, Jan. 9, 2011 – The Phoenix Suns signed guard Zabian Dowdell of the Tulsa 66ers today for the first GATORADE Call-Up of the 2010-11 Development League season. Dowdell’s call-up increases the number of current players with D-League experience to 70.
Dowdell (6-3, 190) started all of Tulsa’s first 18 games this season, leading the team to a Western Conference-best 12-6 record. Dowdell averaged team highs in points (14.5), assists (4.6) and steals (2.4) in 29.3 minutes per game. His steals average currently ranks second in the league, and he’s one of only two players all season to have six steals in two separate games.
Dowdell averaged 10.0 points and 3.8 assists in five games with the Suns’ 2010 Summer League team, and he appeared in five preseason games with Phoenix, averaging 5.4 points in 12.8 minutes. Dowdell joined Tulsa this season as a returning player after averaging 12.9 points in 10 games with the 66ers last season. He’s also played professionally in Italy and France, averaging 19.5 points in 37 games with Casale Monferrato of the Italian Lega2 in 2008-09.
In a four-year career at Virginia Tech, Dowdell averaged 14.6 points, 3.6 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.0 steals in 122 games. As a senior, Dowdell led the Hokies in scoring with 17.4 points per game, earning All- First Team and Associated Press All-America Honorable Mention honors.
Dowdell has joined the Suns and will be available when the team hosts the Cleveland Cavaliers at 8 p.m. ET tonight at the U.S. Airways Center.
