Tulsa Shock Hires Teresa Edwards
TULSA, Okla. (Nov. 22, 2010) – The Tulsa Shock have hired former women’s basketball star, Teresa Edwards to be their Director of Player Personnel.
“We are extremely happy that we are able to attract a lady with such high standards and great credentials in the world of women’s basketball,” Shock General Manager and Head Coach Nolan Richardson said. “I’m really looking forward to working with her.”
Most recently, Edwards played for the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx in 2003 and 2004, reaching the playoffs in both seasons, before becoming an assistant coach for them in 2006 and 2007.
“I think it’s an opportunity to be a part of greatness,” said Edwards, about coming to Tulsa. “It’s great to have an opportunity to work with Coach Richardson. I am learning more and more about his history, what he means to this area and it is incredible.”
Edwards is Basketball’s first and only American basketball player (male or female) to compete in five Olympics where she has won four golds and one bronze medal. She earned the distinct honor of being the youngest recipient of a women’s Olympic gold medal in 1984 and the oldest gold medalist in 2001. Team has compiled a record of 205-14 with Edwards on the roster. She was named the Basketball Player of the Year in 1987, 1990, 1996 and 2000 and was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010. She currently serves on the Basketball Board of Directors and the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame Board.
The University of Georgia () standout, Edwards is also an inductee in the “Circle of Honor” and has had her number five jersey retired at the school.
“I think I’m a person that’s going to engulf the process first,” said Edwards about joining the Shock. “I’m going to allow myself to truly understand what we have and what we are working with so we can truly build a strong a franchise here.”
