Tulsa Tech Provides Aerospace Training

Spirit AerosyStems, one of the world’s largest designers and manufacturers of aerostructures for commercial aircraft, recently utilized Tulsa Tech’s Business and Industry Services to provide technical training associated with composite construction for their employees.
In addition to many exciting high school career programs and full-time and part-time adult classes, Tulsa Tech offers excellent customized training for business and industry. By providing the resources and training that companies need to compete cost-effectively, Tulsa Tech’s Business and Industry Services have had a significant economic impact on and formed lasting relationships with many Tulsa-area companies.
Spirit AerosyStems, one of the world’s largest designers and manufacturers of aerostructures for commercial aircraft, recently utilized Tulsa Tech’s Business and Industry Services to provide technical training associated with composite construction for their employees. The company’s manufacturing facility in Tulsa fabricates composite and metallic wing components for the Boeing 737NG, 747-8, 777 and 787. The site is also responsible for the design and delivery of the fully integrated wing for both the G280 and G650 aircraft, and produces radomes, engine cowls and rudders for the military’s E3 AWACS program.
“The technical training that we provided covered most of the concepts related to working with composite materials,” Beverly Griffin, one of Tulsa Tech’s Industrial Coordinators, says. “These concepts included everything from the principles of composite bonding to building complete composite structures.”
Composite construction refers to the principle of using separate materials that are bound together to act as a single unit, which is stronger than either one of the individual materials. Modern composites include a wide variety of materials that are combined with many types of polymers and used to construct products that are both strong and lightweight. Aerospace components, like the products produced by Spirit, are just one example of high-performance products that need to be lightweight, yet strong enough to take harsh loading conditions.
When Spirit decided that many employees required additional training in order to develop the necessary skills to work with these composite materials, they contacted Tulsa Tech’s Business and Industry Services. As an industrial coordinator, Griffin began working with the group to produce a plan that would meet the specific needs of Spirit and facilitate the company’s production schedule.
“Each of the training sessions were offered in 80-hour increments,” Griffin says. “These sessions were set up for both daytime and evening shifts and involved approximately 100 employees.”
According to Griffin, the ability to customize and accommodate any industry client’s training needs is what makes Tulsa Tech’s services so unique.
