Tulsa Tough partnering with Partners in Education

Tulsa Tough Ride & Race is partnering with Partners in Education for the selection and support of kids as part of the Tough Kids program.

The Tough Kids bicycle program is in its fourth year and was designed to encourage children to adopt healthy lifestyles, fight childhood obesity, and improve their quality of life by engaging them in a fun, healthy activity enjoyable for the entire family. The program awards third through fifth-graders Trek bicycles provided by the Children’s Hospital at Saint Francis upon completion of a Safe Escape course by Tulsa’s Crime Commission, bicycle skills training by a local League of American Bicyclists instructors, and participation in the eight-mile Townie ride on Sunday, June 6.

The partnership allows the Tough Kids program to reach youth who have been unable to participate in the past.

“Over the years we noticed many children were unable to participate in the program because their parents did not have adequate transportation or were unable to take time away from jobs. To remedy this, we’re taking our program to the kids,” said Event Director Malcolm McCollam.

Partners in Education volunteers will help transport participating youth to the training sessions and the Crime Commission will visit each participating school to present its Safe Escape program to the entire class including Tough Kids participants.

Participants have already been selected from Alcott, Addams, Cooper, Houston, Mark Twain and McKinley elementary schools.

Racing events and festivities surrounding Tulsa Tough Ride & Race will kick off the evening of Friday, June 4, and culminate with the eight-mile Townie Ride on Sunday, June 6. Anyone can sign up for the Townie Ride at tulsatough.com or any of the other associated tour rides featured on the site.
