Tulsa Town Hall Season to Begin

DOWNTON CRAZE: On Sept. 19, Jessica Fellowes, author of New York Times bestseller The World of Downton Abbey and niece of creator and scriptwriter Julian Fellowes, will appear at The Tulsa Performing Arts Center on Sept. 19 to kick off the 80th season of Tulsa Town Hall.
Independence hasn’t dampened Americans’ fascination with the lives of British aristocrats. As the country eagerly awaits the fifth season debut of Downton Abbey, a British television fictional drama depicting the lives of the Crawley family and their servants in Yorkshire County, Tulsans will get a peek behind the scenes.
On Sept. 19, Jessica Fellowes, author of New York Times bestseller The World of Downton Abbey and niece of creator and scriptwriter Julian Fellowes, will appear at The Tulsa Performing Arts Center to kick off the 80th anniversary season of Tulsa Town Hall. Fellowes’ appearance as the Sandra West Memorial Speaker is made possible with support from the Bob West Family.
As a true insider, Fellowes will share the real-life inspirations for the show, which are both historical figures and characters from her family. Fellowes will also discuss the sociohistorical context of the show, particularly its relation to post-World War I Britain as technology and women’s roles changed and its class hierarchy crumbled.
Fellowes has authored many books since beginning her career as a celebrity interviewer, lifestyle editor and gossip columnist for the British newspaper, Mail On Sunday.
Other 2014-15 Tulsa Town Hall speakers include bestselling author Bill Bryson, award-winning foreign policy analyst Fareed Zakaria, World War II scholar James Bradley and puzzle master Will Shortz.
Begun in 1935 by an all-volunteer board, Tulsa Town Hall () is a nonprofit, education cultural organization that is dedicated to opening minds and stirring curiosities. Among the nationally and internationally prominent speakers who have appeared in past seasons are Thornton Wilder, Henry Kissinger, David MCullough, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Rick Steves, Anna Quindlen, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Ted Koppel and most recently, Khaled Hosseini, Mia Farrow, Dan Rather, Gentry Lee and Timothy Egan.
Each season includes five one-hour lectures from September through May. The lectures take place on Fridays at 10:30 a.m. in The Tulsa Performing Arts Center Chapman Music Hall at 3rd Street and Cincinnati Avenue. Series subscriptions cost $75.
