Tulsa Women’s Soccer Team Blanks UTEP, 1-0


Tulsa, Oklahoma – The University of Tulsa women’s soccer team snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 1-0 win over UTEP on Sunday afternoon at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. The Golden Hurricane moved to 6-8 on the season and 1-5 in Conference USA, while the Miners fell to 9-5 overall and 2-4 in the league.

“It was a hard-fought, well-deserved win,” Assistant Coach Jim Rhein said.“We weren’t as clean as we’ve been in the past, but we were definitely more blue-collar than we’ve been in a while.We changed our system of play today, putting just three [Claire Hulcer, Rachel Garcia and Maddie Jones] in the back.Those three and Katie [Bykowski] did an incredible job for the limited amount of time we prepared for this game.”

Brandi Neilson scored her second goal of the season in as many games, both of which were scored off of penalty kicks.Neilson’s goal today came at the 73:50 mark.

Rebecca Handley and Jordan O’Brien led the Golden Hurricane attack with three goals apiece, while Claire Nicholson, Neilson, Stephanie Aitken and Shelby Martin each attempted two shots.Katie Bykowski logged all 90 minutes in goal, picked up five saves and earned her third clean sheet of the season.

TU had a 19-16 lead in shots, including a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal, while both teams attempted four corner kicks.

Tulsa will return to action against Memphis on Friday, Oct. 15th.Game time is set for 5:00 p.m. at the Hurricane Stadium.
