Tulsan Honored by U. of Kentucky

Tulsan Joseph W. Craft has been inducted into the University of Kentucky 2010 Hall of Distinguished Alumni. Every five years since 1965, the association has been selecting alumni for this recognition for their personal and professional achievements. Twenty alumni are being honored this year, bringing membership in the Hall of Distinguished Alumni to 283.
Craft, a Hazard, Kentucky native, is president and chief executive officer of Tulsa-based Alliance Resource Partners, L.P., a diversified coal producer and marketer. He received an undergraduate degree in accounting in 1972 from the University of Kentucky before earning a law degree from UK in 1976.
The Joe Craft Center, a state-of-the-art basketball practice facility for the Kentucky Wildcats men’s and women’s basketball teams was named for him after he pledged $6 million toward the completion of the project. This was the largest private gift in the history of UK Athletics.
Previously Craft served as president of MAPCO Coal Inc. He also was senior vice president of MAPCO Inc. and had previously been that company’s general counsel and chief financial officer. He is a former chairman of the National Coal Council, a board and executive committee member and chairman of the safety, health and human resources committee of the National Mining Association, a director of American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity, a director of Financial Corporation since April of 2007, a member of the board of trustees for the University of Tulsa and a director of the Tulsa Community Foundation. Craft also is a graduate of the Senior Executive Program of the Alfred P. Sloan School of Management at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
