TU Professor Wins Advertising Educator Award

Long-time advertising executive and 15-year University of Tulsa adjunct professor of advertising, Bill Hinkle, was awarded “Advertising Educator of the Year??? by the 10th District of the American Advertising Federation, covering the four states of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana. The award was presented at the annual 10th District Convention, this year held in Houston, Texas, April 24-26.
Hinkle’s students participated in The National Advertising Competition while attending the conference with their professor. They took first place in two of the categories and they placed third overall. The University of Tulsa earned more awards than any other college in the competition. This was a great way for the college to share its bright students with the nation.
Hinkle, along with Graphics Professor Teresa Valero, created The Ad Program at The University of Tulsa two years ago with the two heading an advertising certificate curriculum in the TU Communications school that includes multiple courses in advertising, public relations, traditional media strategy and sales, new media, graphic design and broadcast video production.
“What an honor,??? said Hinkle. It’s our intention to build The Ad Program at the University of Tulsa to a level above any other in the country. With the incredible support the TU administration has offered along with unbelievable assistance from the Tulsa advertising, PR, media, graphic design and creative resources industry, TU will be known as ‘the school’ to consider when a prospective student is seeking this type and quality of education. Our TU Ad Program advisory board (over 50 local industry leaders) has stepped up with financial help, internships, mentoring and, above all, jobs.???
The Ad Program at The University of Tulsa also includes many regionally known instructors from the industry. Steve Turnbo, Chairman Emeritus of Schnake Turnbo Frank, teaches public relations and Rick Cohn, past general manger of Clear Channel Communications over four states, and now General Sales Manager of , Channel 2 in Tulsa, teaches Media Strategy and Sales.
Dr. John Coward, Chair of the TU Communications School, added, “Bill Hinkle has been inspiring TU communication students for years and I’m pleased that his efforts have been recognized. He brings tremendous experience, energy and creativity to his advertising classes and I couldn’t be prouder. On behalf of the Faculty of Communication, I congratulate Professor Hinkle on this award. We are proud of his accomplishments.???
