Twiggy is Back at Tulsa Boat Show

TWIGGY

The 2005 Tulsa Boat, Sport & Travel Show, presented by Mercury Marine, will feature an encore performance of Twiggy, the world’s only water-skiing squirrel, show officials announced today.

Twiggy, a Florida gray squirrel, glides around a 25-foot circular heated pool on a miniature pair of water skis towed behind a remote-controlled Ski Nautique powerboat.

Six generations of famous squirrels, all known as Twiggy I through VI, have traveled the world to entertain spectators for more than a quarter of a century. It began in 1978 when Chuck and Lou Ann Best took in a squirrel after a hurricane blew her from a treetop nest. The couple, avid water-skiers, decided to introduce the new family member to their favorite water sport. Using repetition, affection, and an ample supply of nuts, Twiggy was taught the sport on foot-long skis pulled by a remote-controlled boat. A local newspaper article resulted in a national media frenzy, and Twiggy has since been featured in movies and on television shows, newspapers, and magazines.

Held at Expo Square on January 31 through February 6, hours for the 40th annual show are Monday (VIP Night), 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Tuesday–Thursday, noon to 9 p.m.; Friday, noon to 10 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Twiggy’s show is free with paid boat show admission, which is $8 for adults and $4 for children ages six through 12. Children five and under are admitted free. VIP Night tickets are $20, or $10 with a discount invitation available from exhibitors and sponsors.
