The Union Athletic Department honored and celebrated the lives of three very important people October 29 at the Union vs. Southmoore football game during pre-game festivities.

The radio booth in the press box at the newly renovated Union Tuttle Stadium was dedicated in honor of the late Gary “Doc” Blevins.  Doc served as Union High School Fellowship of Christian Athletes sponsor for almost 40 years and began announcing Union Athletic events in 1978. His Public Address announcing duties included football, basketball, wrestling, baseball, softball and volleyball.  In 1990, Doc negotiated a contract with KXOJ and put the Union football games on the radio while he served as the play-by-play voice.  In 2016, Doc was inducted into the Union Athletic Department Hall of Fame.  We are honored to celebrate Doc’s legacy for his years of service, support and friendship to the students and staff of Union Public Schools.

LIZ AND JIM BEEMAN DEDICATION: The Union Athletic Department dedicated the new press box at the newly renovated Union Tuttle Stadium in honor of the late Jim and Liz Beeman. Pictured, from left, sons Doc Beeman, Jim Beeman and Father Dan Beeman and Union Athletic Director Emily Barkley.

The public address booth in Union Tuttle Stadium’s press box was dedicated in honor of the late Jim and Liz Beeman.  Jim Beeman volunteered his services as the football public address announcer for over 23 years, with his wife Liz alongside as the PA spotter during this same time. Having worked with six athletic directors and four head football coaches, the Beeman’s were a staple in the press box, making sure the game scripts were delivered on time and student-athletes were properly identified. In addition, from 2003-2013, Liz Beeman assisted Andy Erwin with the coordination of the U-View from her seat in the press box. The Beeman’s were actively involved with activities for their three sons (Jim, Doc and Daniel) who all graduated from Union Public Schools.  A frequent attendee of all Union activities, Liz Beeman was a beloved teacher at Union High School for over 27 years, where she earned Teacher of the Year honors in 1996 and again in 2014-2015.  Jim and Liz Beeman, the dynamic duo behind the Voice of Union Athletics for many years, were inducted into the Union Athletic Department Hall of Fame in 2015.
