Union Outlasts Jenks’ Comeback Bid in GTR Cup

Freshman Colby Evans, better known as “Precious’’ to his friends, played a sweet game with three goals and an assist, leading Union to a 5-3 victory over Jenks in the first round of the Cup Sunday at the Center.
The Redskins advanced to play Broken Arrow Tuesday at 4:30 in the championship game.
Evans scored Union’s first two goals and assisted on the third as his team opened a 4-0 first-period lead. Jake Curtis recorded the fourth goal from 10-feet out along the left wing and gave the Trojans a big hurdle to overcome .
“They forgot to show up,’’ Jenks coach Sly Naud said of his team. “I think some of us were nervous and then they had a 4-0 lead. We outscored them 3-1 and were still down a couple. I don’t think we played poorly. They (Redskins) were readier than we were when the puck dropped.’’
Naud’s club outshot Union 44-27, but with Evans hot and the Redskins hungry, it didn’t make a differecne. Evans whipped in an unassisted power play shot midway in the second period to make it 5-1 and give his team a winning cushion.
“I had confidence we would win the game,’’ Evans said after Union led 4-0. “I knew we had it locked up and we shut them down. I really wanted to win and Jenks is always fun to play. We played well and dominated them.’’
However, Jenks did not go quietly. Team captain Kirby Wilson scored twice with assists from assistant captain Cody Sharrock.. Derek Smith collected the other goal for the Trojans with 3:54 left in the second period. He caught Union goalie Brandon Smith down and out of position to score easily as Jenks used an extra asttacker.
