The Union Redskins, under the coaching leadership of Rudy Garcia, continue to celebrate the team’s third basketball Class 6A championship after the 72-64 win over Putnam City West March 15 at the Mabee Center on the campus in Tulsa.
Union finished the season with a 27-2 record and a 13-game winning streak.
Shawn Olden led the Redskins with 20 points and nine rebounds. Oklahoma football signees Carson Meier scored 16 points, and Jeff Mead had 14 as the Redskins won its second championship in three years and third overall.
Union defeated No. 2 Midwest City in the semifinals the night before to make it to the championship game.
It was an amazing season for Coach Garcia, who in 2012 led Union to the state’s first undefeated season for a boys 6A basketball team since Norman did it in 1990.
Garcia has amassed an impressive record during his 17 seasons as Union’s head boys basketball coach, winning three state championships and two Oklahoma Coach of the Year honors along the way.
