Williams Breaks Indoor 3K Record

GENEVA, Ohio — Oklahoma sophomore Kevin Williams broke the program record in the 3,000-meter run as he led a group of men’s distance athletes at the GaReat Collegiate Invitational Saturday inside the GaReat Sports Complex. Williams time of 7:57.46 narrowly edged the previous record of 7:57.47, run by Rob Sorrell at last year’s Husky Invitational.

As of the conclusion of the meet, Saturday’s time by Williams is the fastest in the Big 12 this season as the sophomore shaved off four seconds of his previous PR of 8:01.76, finishing fourth in the race. Just behind Williams was Kevin Schwab with a time of 7:57.60, a PR and the third-fastest 3K in Oklahoma history.

Two others added their names to the OU record books in the event as George Alex ran the fourth-fastest race in OU history with a time of 7:58.30 and Bill Kogal clocked the fifth fastest at 8:04.61. Four of the top five 3,000-meter runs in Oklahoma history have now come in the last two years.

The men’s mile saw Eric Harasyn take second place with a season-best time of 4:05.10. Harasyn was less than a second off the winning time of 4:04.39 from Princeton’s Peter Callahan. OU’s Frezer Legesse was fifth with a time of 4:06.08, the eight-best performance in Oklahoma history.

First-year Sooner Malcolm Wankel took fourth in the 800-meter run Saturday as he ran the program’s ninth-fastest time in the event. Wankel’s 1:51.74 is the fastest by a Big 12 freshman this season.
