WNBA All-Stars to Face USA Basketball Women’s National Team in 2010 WNBA All-Star Game
The WNBA announced Wednesday that the 2010 All-Star Game will sport a new format with the USA Basketball Women’s National Team, coached by Geno Auriemma, taking on a team of WNBA All-Stars.
President Donna Orender announced at a press conference at Mohegan Sun Casino that the game would take place on the Connecticut Sun’s home court at Mohegan Sun Arena on July 10 at 3:30 p.m and will be aired by ESPN.
The change in format will offer the USA Women’s Basketball National Team players a chance to train together for a few days in the summer as they prepare for the 2010 FIBA World Championship. In 2004, the game took a similar form as an exhibition in which the U.S. Women’s Olympic Basketball Team faced a team of WNBA stars at Radio City Music Hall in New York City prior to the Olympic Games in Athens.
Even with the new format, fans will be able to vote their favorite players into the All-Star Game. Fans will vote for five players from both the Eastern and Western Conferences to participate in the game. National Team players selected by the fans will play for the USA team with the other players suiting up for the WNBA All-Star Team. WNBA head coaches will then vote to fill the final roster spots.
Sun season-ticket holders may purchase their current seats for the All-Star Game prior to the on-sale date. Fans who purchase a Sun Mini-Plan, available on Feb. 1, may also buy tickets to the midsummer classic before they are available to the public. More
