Zebco To Host Free Fishing Event

FAMILY FUN: Youngsters enjoyed fishing at last year’s Zebco free fishing event. More fun is expected this year on June 4 at Mohawk and LaFortune parks.
The sport of fishing can be given a free ‘test drive’ at the Zebco free “Take Me Fishing” Day on Saturday, June 4 at Mohawk and LaFortune Parks. No fishing license is required in Oklahoma on June 4 in honor of National Fishing and Boating Week (NFBW), a national celebration that promotes reconnecting with family through the recreation of fishing and boating.
In honor of NFBW, Zebco will be stocking catfish and perch for the event in the ponds at Mohawk and LaFortune Parks. Contest hours are 6 a.m. until noon, but everybody can come and go throughout the morning as they please. Fishing is open to all ages and participation is free. Mohawk Park does charge a $1 per car parking fee after 9 a.m.
Mohawk Park offers the largest fishing area with two locations. Fish will be stocked in the small creek on both sides of the zoo, and also at the pond located on the park’s east side. At LaFortune Park, fish will be stocked in the pond at the corner of 51st Street and Hudson Street. Enter from 51st Street where the sign reads “The Gardens.”
The first 200 kids 12 years and under at each location will get a free fishing hat. Prizes will be awarded for the catching of specially tagged fish. More than 300 fish will be tagged and distributed between the two parks and 20 fish will have Citgo tags worth $50 gas cards each. Other tagged fish prizes include rods, reels and fishing tackle. Tagged fish must be caught during contest hours to be eligible for prizes.
Those fishing should bring their own poles and bait and, if desired, their own drinks and snacks. Availability of restrooms varies by location. Kids with a free Zebco tattoo can also get into the Mohawk Park Zoo for free this day when accompanied by a paying adult.
Everybody is invited to join in all the fun at the free Zebco “Take Me Fishing” Day on Saturday, June 4 and help celebrate National Fishing and Boating Week. It’s a great opportunity for those who already fish to introduce someone new to the sport.
