Zoo Splash!

The Tulsa Zoo and Living Museum, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Tulsa, is making a “Splash” with an exciting, new event this spring. The zoo proudly announces Sea Lion Splash, a fundraising event benefiting the zoo’s Growing Wild! Capital Campaign. The proceeds from this event will go towards the renovation of the zoo’s California Sea Lion Exhibit. A portion of the proceeds will also benefit the Rotary Club’s Community Fund.

Rotarian Glenn Wright, left in the photo, will serve as the honorary chair for this wet ‘n wild event. He is accompanied by Rotarian Karen Keith, center, Mary Collins, Tulsa Zoo Friends Executive Director and Briney, Tulsa Zoo Sea Lion (female).

Through this joint effort, a Rubber Sea Lion Race will be hosted for the general public. KVOO will serve as the radio sponsor for this event. Thanks to the support of event sponsors, 10,000 rubber sea lions will make a “splash” into the lagoon at River West Festival Park on Saturday, April 1, 2006. The race will be an exciting event for the whole family to enjoy!

Anyone can participate. “Splash” tickets will be sold for $10 each. Ticket holders will receive a numbered ticket that corresponds to each rubber sea lion purchased. The more tickets you buy, the greater chances of winning some fabulous prizes. Tickets go on sale February 1, 2006. “Splash” tickets are available through members of the Rotary Club of Tulsa and the Tulsa Zoo Friends office.

The Sea Lion Splash event kicks off with the rubber sea lion race. The Tulsa Fire Department will use fire hoses to spray the sea lions throughout the lagoon. Afterwards, trained “dock dogs” (Labrador Retrievers) will serve as retrievers for the 30 winning sea lions. Each winner will be announced during the awards ceremony in which the winning ticket holders can claim their prize(s). “Splash” sponsors and entertainment will also be recognized via local celebrities.

The event will also include a “Splash” festival. In cooperation with the Tulsa River Parks Authority, the “Splash” festival will offer the community the chance to participate in a host of family, fun activities including live entertainment, children’s games, food and much more! “This unique event offers something for everyone. It’s a great way for families to have fun and support a great cause” said Mary Collins, Tulsa Zoo Friends Executive Director. For information about the event, log on to www.sealionsplash.com.
